Search & Rescue!

The subject for the last two weeks in fire science was search and rescue. Students were in the classroom learning the tactics and about the gear for the first part of the week. Last Friday they were able to gear up and begin implementing what they learned in the classroom while going through a practical.

Using tools and communication the kids were able to find downed victims and learn the layout for self extrication as well as victim rescue. They became more familiar with their gear and learned more about re servicing air tanks and rehab when it comes to firefighter safety.

Using the old pre school to set up scenarios we put them to the test. Unlike Friday when they did their first round of practicals with a clear mask on, they would now be challenged to do the procedures they had been working on with wax paper covering the fronts of their masks to simulate smoke. They found using the tactics they had learned became even more important because they did not have their clear site to help them. Staying together with the buddy system and navigating through to find victims proved to be more of a challenge then expected but they were able to get through it and did a great job.
